Another name for being mindful is to become your own friend. It points toward being present to whatever is happening in your mind, body or around you. However, another definition of mindfulness is to keep your awareness open to all the things just as you stay open to your friends, without judgment, reaction or criticism. You come to entertain all the experiences without any prejudice and try to stay objective.
If a negative thought crosses your mind, you say, “Ah, there is one negative thought”. And without reacting and getting tangled in it, you simply let it run its own course. You do not resist; you simply witness it. Within a moment, this thought will generate another thought. Again, you say, “Ah, here comes another one”. Just being present to the arising thoughts help you understand how things and thoughts, unwittingly, tangle together to create larger undesirable circumstances. This awareness helps you to deal with the things gently just as you would deal with friends.
Try to make friends with your thoughts, circumstances, job, and partners and see if it changes your perspective about things. I would love to hear from you. Research studies indicate that accepting present moment is key to improving health and well being.
