  • Mindfulness in business world sounds so off-place? How does it work? Major corporations ( E.g. Google, Apple, IBM, Intel, McKinsey &Company, General Electric, General Mills, Nike, Sony, Ford, Target, IKEA, eBay, LinkedIn, U.S. Marines, US Department of Defense, etc.) are beginning to offer mindfulness sessions to their employees because it increases productivity, innovativeness and competence and keep the negative emotions at work in check. • What is the Return on Investment (ROI) for these kinds of programs? A recent systematic review published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology (2018) indicated that in Canada alone the cost of workplace stress is from $2B to $10B each year. Sun Life Financial, Canada indicated that, “Wellness programs save about 1.5 to 1.7 days in absenteeism per worker over 12 months, or an estimated $251 per employee per year in savings.”1 In other past studies, the ROI ranged from $1.49 to $13 for every one dollar spent on health and wellness program. Additionally, Canada Life in Toronto showed a ROI of $3.40 for each dollar and Dr. Roy Shephard found that corporate wellness program returned a cumulative benefit of $500-700/worker per year. Similar results have been shown for Municipal employees in Toronto, BC Hydro and Toronto Life Assurance.
